BSI was launched in 2010 with £6.7 million initial funding under an accountable grant from DFID for 3 years, later extended to 5 years until September 2015. A further £2.5 million grant from Sida was awarded in late 2014, to cover BSI activities until March 2018. Country specific smaller grants from various donors (GIZ, WB, UNDP etc.) have become increasingly important in the financing structure of BSI, with core funding covering only around 20% of the annual expenditure in 2016-17. The annual budget consistently increased since 2010, reaching around £5 million in 2016-17.
